Game jam · Sound & music

The player is
the instrument.

A jam game where you perform as a court jester and the audience decides whether it was funny. The keys are notes, the timing is the joke, which makes the music the mechanic rather than the backdrop. Written in one weekend.

Four audiences,
one act.

The levels run Peasants, Nobility, Hereditary, Royalty: the same performance in front of a crowd that gets harder to please. Seventy seconds from the jam recording. Nothing loads until you press play.

The music, on its own.

No separate master of this score survives. It only exists inside the recording of the game, so this excerpt is decoded from it.

Writing against a clock

A jam gives you a weekend, and the game is still changing on Sunday morning. There is no second pass and no time to be precious: the first idea has to be the one that works, and it has to keep working while the levels around it move.

Here that meant keeping the material simple enough to stay recognisable when the player is making their own noise on top of it. Four keys produce notes; anything dense underneath would turn the performance into mush.

When the music is the mechanic

Most game music sits under the action. This one sits inside it. The player hits the clouds in time, the audience reacts, and the score has to leave room for both. That is a different brief from "write something medieval and funny", and it is the reason the arrangement stays thin on purpose.
